Barack Obama Wins 2012 Election, Gets Second Term

President Obama won a second term in the White House Tuesday night, Fox News projects, overcoming concerns about the fragile economic recovery to edge out Republican nominee Mitt Romney.
The models showed Obama making it over the required 270 electoral votes with wins in the crucial battleground of Ohio, as well as Iowa and Oregon. The race in Ohio, though, remained airtight as votes were still being counted, raising questions about the final tally -- with just over three-quarters of returns in, the candidates remained virtually tied with Obama leading by a few thousand votes.
Obama broke out early in the night, winning a string of key battlegrounds even as Romney built his electoral-vote count with wins in reliably conservative states. Obama scored a big win in Pennsylvania, a vital battleground where Romney made a late play for support. Obama also walked away with a win in the swing states of Nevada, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Minutes before Obama was projected the winner, Romney claimed his first battleground prize of the night with a projected victory in North Carolina, where the Democrats held their 2012 convention.
Elsewhere, Obama and Romney each racked up expected victories Tuesday night in relatively safe territory.
Romney was the projected winner in Utah, Montana, Arizona, Missouri, Idaho, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, West Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Indiana and Kentucky.
Fox News projects Obama was the winner in his home state of Illinois, California, Hawaii, Washington, Minnesota, New Mexico, Maine, New York, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and the District of Columbia.
The vote Tuesday marked the end of a grueling race. For Obama, the election is the last time his name will appear on a ballot, or so he claims. For Romney, the election closed out a nearly six-year run for the presidency. The Republican nominee ran unsuccessfully in 2008.
The 2012 campaign was decidedly different from 2008, when Obama ran on a lofty message of change and leveraged voter dissatisfaction with the George W. Bush administration -- and particularly the war in Iraq -- to defeat Republican nominee John McCain.
This time around, each candidate's campaign message was bound to the state of the economy, having suffered a recession shortly before Obama took office. Romney argued forcefully that Obama failed to deliver the kind of economic rebound that typically follows a downturn. The Republican nominee accused the president of throwing money at the problem with a poorly designed stimulus, and then abandoning the issue altogether to focus on passing ObamaCare. Romney argued that the health care law, along with countless regulations and an allegedly anti-business attitude, all combined to stand in the way of a full-throated recovery.
Issues like the Libya terror attack and the threat from Iran's nuclear program brought foreign policy into the mix, but the economy remained central.
But Obama argued all along that, despite the slack in the system, the country was moving in the right direction. He pointed to recent economic reports, including Labor Department data showing the jobless rate falling below 8 percent for the first time since he took office, as signs that the economy was improving and would get better over time.
He warned that Romney's agenda -- which he described as tax breaks for the rich and giveaways to corporations -- would only reprise the "failed" economic policies of the prior administration which he claimed led to the recession.
Election Day was unexpectedly busy for the campaigns. While Obama himself kept a low profile in Chicago, the campaign dispatched Vice President Biden to Ohio where he visited a Cleveland restaurant and later posed for pictures with volunteers before joining up with the president.
Romney, meanwhile, made stops in Ohio and Pennsylvania before heading back to campaign headquarters in Boston.
As races continued to be called well into the morning, it appeared that the balance of power in Washington could remain the same. Republican kept their majority in the House, while Democrats were fending off a series of challenges to their majority in the Senate.

Gangnam Style’ Video Breaks Guinness World Record

PSY’s video has seen a global stamp of approval on YouTube, amassing 2,234,641 YouTube “likes” as of this writing and crushing the 1,575,979 tally of previous record holder, LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” That makes “Gangnam Style” the most “liked” video in YouTube history, a mere three months after the video’s release.
As for the all-time most watched YouTube video, that accolade can still go to Justin Bieber, whose 2010 music video for the song “Baby” stands tall at 780,683,863 views. “Gangnam Style” has about a quarter of that number at this time.
Why has PSY’s  video seen such overwhelming popularity? “Nightline” explains in the segment below.

MARIAH CAREY & NICKI MINAJ CALL TRUCE

EXCLUSIVE
0923-mariah-carey-nicki-minaj
Mariah Carey pulled Nicki Minaj aside yesterday and convinced her ... feuding would not be good for the show, and they both needed to stop the antics they pulled during Sunday's auditions.

"American Idol" sources tell TMZ ... Mariah and others were ticked off Sunday that Nicki arrived 45 minutes late ... and that set the tone for the whole day.  Although Nigel Lythgoe is saying everything was hunky dory Sunday, we know it wasn't.  Mariah talked over Nicki, criticizing her critiques, and Nicki fired right back.

But on Monday, Mariah buttonholed Nicki and the 2 agreed ... a feud wouldn't be good for the show, so they buried the hatchet and walked down the hall smiling, hand-in-hand.

But here's the thing.  We're thinking a feud is exactly what "A.I." needs.

iPhone 5: When technology expires

There are few fields within which “legacy” is a dirty word, but technology is one of them, writes Tom Chatfield.
As the near-hysteria around Apple’s unveiling of its latest iPhone ably illustrated, digital culture’s hunger for the future remains as ravenous as ever.
As the announcement progressed, the technology press went into overdrive, poring over the tiniest details of the new phone. In contrast to previous launches, opinion was divided. For some, its larger screen, faster processor and fourth generation network capabilities were not the transformation that they had wanted or expected. For others, it was the perfect evolution: the promise of an ever-more instantaneous ease of usage that is the epitome of contemporary technological aspiration.
Despite the split response, analysts predict the phone will be a hit and could become the fastest selling iPhone yet.
In part, I suspect, this is because of a peculiar phenomenon that exists in the world of technology, where the concept of “legacy” has become a dirty word. Older systems and machines are at once an embarrassment and a hindrance, and servicing so-called “technical debt” is an ever-increasing burden.
It’s an attitude that comes hitched, appropriately enough, to an ever-more seamless emphasis on constant upgrading and updates . You barely need to blink before you’re up and running on the latest model. Buy a new iPhone, and all your old apps, music and books will sync onto your shiny new hardware, effortlessly shunting that antiquated iPhone 4S out of sight and mind. What’s on offer is a perpetual present: bright, fast, and constantly renewed. A new body for your phone’s soul.
The very word “upgrade” embodies an assumption of certain good – and this is often the case. Yet within this process there also lies a form of self-deception. As your digital assets are sucked from your old phone and transplanted into your new one, there is a sense that these assets are yours.  Like moving a book between shelves, you are allowed to think that they are your property to do with as you please. But, as a tabloid rumour that flickered and died earlier this month showed neatly, this could not be further from the truth.
‘Constant novelty’
The story – or more accurately rumour – concerned the actor Bruce Willis, who was alleged to be considering suing Apple over his (in)ability to leave the contents of his iTunes library to his children after his death. It’s already prehistoric news in techy terms. Yet it struck a chord that continues to resonate: what exactly happens when the intractably human business of living and dying meets the weightless world of apps, data clouds and virtual assets?
Take the terms under which Facebook enables a user to sign over control of their account to someone else. The company’s statement of rights and responsibilities specifies that “you will not transfer your account... to anyone without first getting our written permission” – a hurdle likely to prove problematic for the dead.
Since 2009, Facebook has blazed one trail by allowing the profiles of users verified as deceased to be converted into permanent “memorialized accounts”. When it comes to digital media libraries, however, the legal possibilities for bequests are largely non-existent. Apple’s terms and conditions for its iCloud service are blunt, for example, stating that there is “no right of survivorship” – a delightful turn of phrase in its own right – and that “any rights to your Apple ID or Content within your Account terminate upon your death”.
Similarly – and as has been widely discussed elsewhere – music, films and ebooks purchased through companies like Amazon insist in almost every case that purchases remain associated only with the account that made the original purchase. As long as you’re alive, upgrading and paying your membership dues you’re a welcome member of the club. As soon as you stop being a part of the present, however, the entire edifice crumbles to dust.

New Urban Pop Artist OMI Releases 2 Music Video

Up & coming Jamaican urban pop artiste Omi has just released two debut music videos, for the songs “Standing On All Threes” and “Cheerleader”. Check them out below.

OMI ARTIST BIO

One writer says, ‘some men are born great, some achieve greatness, while others had greatness entrusted upon them.’ In the case of Omi (Omar Samuel Pasley) he was born a great singer! Born on September 3, 1986 in Clarendon, Jamaica, Omi is the last of four children for Kenroy and Rachel Pasley. As a child growing up, he sang at every occasion that provided an audience – the church, school concerts or any other community gathering. Much to the delight of his onlookers, Omi would rise to the occasion once he got the opportunity.
Omi is the newest prodigy for international talent wizard, Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon who successfully produced and marketed such luminaries as Shabba Ranks, Patra and Italian reggae singer Alborosie. Omi is a prolific singer and songwriter inspired by stars such as Nat King Cole, John Legend and Tanya Stephens. He enjoys reasoning on social, cultural and spiritual issues from which he solicits material to incorporate in the body of his songs. The timbre of his voice is smooth, bright and compelling. Omi’s fluid vocal delivery and his contemporary song writing skills will no doubt secure successive hits on both local and international charts.
Omi is being groomed in all aspects of the music business under the direction of the Shang Records Label, spearheaded by Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon. He is currently in the studio laying tracks for his debut album, for which intro singles Standing On All Threes, and Cheerleader have been released.

USAIN BOLT ANNOUNCED FOR ATHLETISSIMA LAUSANNE ON AUGUST 23

Usain Bolt announced for Athletissima Lausanne on August 23
Lausanne, Switzerland – Great news for all Usain Bolt fans! After missing last year’s edition of Athletissima, Usain Bolt is back at the Samsung Diamond League meeting, and will run on the Pontaise track on 23 August for the sixth time. The Jamaican champion will decide after the London Games whether he line up in the 100m or the 200m.
The love story between Bolt and Ahtletissima started in 2006, when the Jamaican ran in Lausanne for the first time. It was a 200m and he immediately fell in love with the Lausanne curve: “It is always a great pleasure to run in Lausanne, in a stadium which has one of the best curves I have ever seen.”
That year, he finished 3rd behind Carter and Gay, but in a great 19.88. The following year, in 2007, he was 2nd behind Gay, again. In 2008 and 2009, he won in 19.63 and 19.59, under pouring rain in what was arguably the best time ever clocked in such miserable weather and has been the Athletissima 200m record since.
In 2010, after 5 weeks of injury, he had wished to run the 100m, which he won in 9.82. This shows that, whatever the distance, the triple Olympic champion, triple World record holder and 5 times World champion puts on an amazing show. This year, his best results so far have been 9.76 and 19.83.
The bronze medalist of the Osaka and Berlin World championships, Wallace Spearmon, will run the 200m. The American sprinter has been among the best in the world for several years and has just won the US trials in 19.82, with too much tailwind though. He had already clocked a sub 20 second time (19.95) at the beginning of the season in Arlington. His PB is 19.65. The European champion Churandy Martina and the winner yesterday in Monaco Nickel Ashmeade will join him.
